Here’s a quick rundown of all the latest marijuana industry news, including what’s new in the cannabis industry:
October Brings Legalized Recreational Cannabis to Canada
As of October 17, 2017, recreational marijuana use will be legalized in Canada. Although this date is later than initially expected, due to a few issues with the provinces’ development of appropriate regulatory measures, royal assent from the governor general is expected to be granted. The bill makes it legal to both sell and use recreational cannabis but does leave regulation of sale up to the governments of individual provinces. Depending on the province, adults above 18 or 19 years old are permitted to possess up to 30 grams of dried herb in public. In many provinces, specific regulations (such as those related to home cultivation) are still in progress.
Recreational Marijuana Sales on the Horizon in Massachusetts
The state of Massachusetts recently passed a bill allowing for the use and sale of recreational cannabis, but retailers have not yet opened to the public because of business license and inspection timelines. However, several dispensaries in the state are approaching the final stages of the licensing process, with approvals potentially coming as soon as late September or early October. Once the retailers are open to the public, anyone over the age of 21 will be allowed to purchase cannabis for recreational use (proof of age is required). However, medical-based dispensaries will remain solely enterable by those with medical cards.
The Medical Cannabis Research Act of 2018 Holds Major Promise
Up for vote is the Medical Cannabis Research Act, a bill that would require the federal government to allow more research-based cultivation facilities. The bill would hold the Attorney General responsible for ensuring an uninterrupted supply of medical-grade cannabis, increasing the number of federally-approved cultivation facilitates to one (presently located in Minnesota) to three. If passed, the bill would be considered a major milestone by many medical marijuana advocates, opening the door for increased research and widespread accessibility for patients.
