Here’s a quick rundown of all the major happenings in the cannabis industry in recent weeks, and what these changes mean for your marijuana business:
Cannabis Extracts Ruled Illegal in Arizona
In July, the Arizona Court of Appeals ruled that cannabis extract products (including oil cartridges) do not fall under the definition of legalized medical marijuana products. This ruling confirms that being found in possession of any cannabis extract product is considered a class-4 felony according to Arizona law, a decision that many medical marijuana patients are unhappy to hear. However, many cannabis-based businesses have elected to continue selling extract products, because it seems that an appeal to the Arizona Supreme Court is inevitable.
Nevada Sales of Recreational Cannabis Soar Above Expectations
In July 2017, recreational cannabis use was legalized in Nevada, a ruling that was celebrated by many residents and visitors alike. Predicted sales promised major growth in the state’s cannabis industry, but the past year as far exceeded even the most optimistic expectations. In the first ten months of legalization alone, recreational marijuana totaled more than $340 million, combining with medical marijuana and related goods sales to surpass $430 million. For many cannabis businesses outside of Nevada, it’s a sign of the bright future of the marijuana industry.
Labeling and Packaging Rules Undergo Updates in Washington
Washington state has tackled the tricky issue of cannabis product labeling and packaging, seeking to make it less confusing and troublesome for marijuana-based businesses. The goal of pushing for labels that are easier to read and understand has led to new requirements that will go into effect January 1, 2019. Some of the changes made through this new measure include the creation of universal symbol to indicate marijuana content, as well as regulations for the packaging of edibles and presentation of product-related materials.
First Retail Cannabis License Issued in Massachusetts
Cultivate Holdings became the first licensed retail cannabis location in the eastern U.S. as of July 2018, taking the Massachusetts cannabis industry one step closer to the future. Despite this exciting progress, the dispensary is still required to work through a series of inspections and approvals before being able to operate officially.
