There are unique social media platforms for the cannabis industry and its consumers. Like all social media platforms, there are tips for success. While there are still some barriers cannabis businesses have to face when it comes to advertising on social media, cultivators, retailers, and brands are able to reach a wider audience than ever before. Organic social media is where you begin.
You can definitely, with time and a strategy, become a leader on social media in the cannabis industry. We’re going to set you on the right path with 5 tips to get a proper head start online.
1. Seek Out Influencers
After you set up a properly branded social media account for your business, the first step is to “follow” influencers in the marijuana industry. Look for authoritative accounts that speak to their community (reply to tweets, comment on Facebook or Instagram, and answer people on YouTube). Start communicating with these influencers but DO NOT go for the sale. You’re creating a relationship right now, that’s all.
2. Spotlight Your Audience
Spotlighting your clients, patients, consumers, etc. on social media can be anything from quotes they give about what their favorite strain, to actual photos of them consuming (depending of the platform). Also, share their content through RTs on Twitter, shares on Facebook, sharing their post on Instagram or repining on Pinterest. Your social stream shouldn’t be just about you. Share the love, and be the biggest fan of your fans.
3. Join The Conversation
Follow hashtags used in your community. Many social media platforms are driven by hashtags. Look up #cannabis, see what you can find. Add value to the conversation. Provide insight for people asking questions on social media like, “What is the best strain for inflammation?” and be a helpful reference for the person answering.
4. Be Relevant
Create content that helps. Similar to number three, look at questions your patients, clients and consumers are asking and create videos, images, or blog posts that answer their questions.
5. Be Consistent, Be Available
Social media success isn’t made through one tweet, once a week or one Instagram graphic whenever you get around to it. Social media success is about continuous, strategized work. Also, be available. Just like an email, you wouldn’t wait four days to reply to a customer’s email. You’d answer sooner than later. The same thing goes for social media, answer messages, comments and replies quickly (within hours if you want bonus points). Strive to be top of mind to your daily growing community.
As more and more states legalize medical and recreational marijuana, cannabis related businesses are seeing significant growth in competition. It’s important for dispensaries and retailers to inform consumers on what makes their business unique, and social media is the solution. Social media is the new word of mouth marketing and you can ignore it, but we can bet your competition isn’t. Now is the time to get started to boost your presence.
